New Brunswick Museum’s Virtual Exhibits

The New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunwick has two virtual exhibits that I found worth spending some time viewing. The first exhibit is called “Double Vision:  New Brunswick Stereographs 1865-1880” and includes many images of the city of Saint John and its harbor as the Scots would’ve seen on their arrival in the early 1870’s.

The second exhibit is “William Francis Ganong’s field trips around the province of New Brunswick” and includes hundreds of photos of rural New Brunswick at the turn of the century. Ganong (born in West Saint John in 1864) and his guides took the photos over a period of summers spent exploring the rivers, lakes, forest, and mountains of untamed New Brunswick. The photos give a wonderful perspective on what it must have been like to settle on wild lands in the Scotch Colony. Ganong was a son of the famous candy makers in New Brunswick, but he chose a career in botany and was a professor at Smith College in Massachusetts for many years.
